How should I care for my jewellery?

Sterling silver can tarnish. This natural process is surface oxidization caused by a reaction with sulphur in the environment. Luckily, proper care can help prevent tarnish and once it happens, it can be removed. 

 

Some items actually look wonderful as they develop a surface patina with age. But it you prefer to keep your silver looking bright and shiny, heed this guidance:

  • Because silver reacts with moisture, storing it in a dry place is very important. 

  • Avoid contact with cosmetics, lotions, sunscreens and harsh detergents.

  • Your jewellery loves to be worn! One of the best ways to minimize tarnish on silver is to wear it, as the rubbing and contact from regular wear helps polish the silver.

  • The Salty Plum jewellery ships with an anti-tarnish tab that you can store with your jewellery to help prevent tarnish. Those little silica packs you find in many product boxes can also be stored with jewellery to remove moisture.

  • You will also receive a complimentary cleaning cloth with your Salty Plum order that can be used to polish your item and help remove any tarnish that does form. 

 

A note about gems and stones…

Stones require special attention. Some, such as amber and mother of pearl, are rather soft and may scratch easily. Others, such as opals and turquoise, are sensitive to water. Should you have questions about specific gemstones, please don’t hesitate to ask me.

 

Do you do customs?

I will take some custom requests. If you have something in mind, please send me an email and we can discuss your desires and budget. 

 

Can you repair my jewellery?

I do not offer repair services, unless the item was purchased from The Salty Plum. 

 

How do I know my ring size?

  • Not that I want to send you away to a commercial jewellery company, but I really like this ring size guide, chart and ruler provided by Bulgari.

  • Many local jewellers will measure your finger in person if you ask. 

  • You can order a reusable ring sizer from The Salty Plum for a small fee and measure yourself.

 

What does it cost to ship to my location?

The Salty Plum offers free shipping on orders of $150 or greater. For orders under that amount, a variety of shipping methods and speeds are available, ranging from $2 lettermail (select items only) to expedited. Shipping costs vary and are reflective of local carrier costs (primarily Canada Post).
